MARTIN C. LUTHER

Martin C. Luther was born on a farm near Hooper, Nebr. in northeast Dodge county on August 5, 1870. He departed this life on April 24, 1936 at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 19 days at his farm home a short distance from his birthplace. He was the son of Martin Luther, Sr. and Caroline Heller Luther.

On June 23, 1893 he was united in marriage to Annie Borcherding who preceded him in death on July 22, 1928. To this union were born seven children, all of whom survive him. They are: Mrs. Amelia Forsberg of Uehling, Nebr.; Henry Luther of Hooper, Nebr.; Mrs. Esther Johnson of Denver, Colo.; Ed and Fred Luther of Fremont, Nebr. and Wheatridge, Colo. respectively; Mrs. Laura Fouts of Hooper, Nebr.; and Mrs. Alta Smith of Denver, Colo.

Besides his children, he is survived by twelve grandchildren and five full brothers and sisters: Ed Luther of Hooper, Nebr.; George of Wisner, Nebr.; Gus of Fremont, Nebr.; Miss Cary Luther of Colfax, Iowa; and Mrs. Emma Rebbe of Saginaw, Mich.; nine half brothers and sisters: Albert and Carl, both of Hooper, Nebr.; Richard of Baxter, Iowa; Otto and Walter of Des Moines, Iowa; John and Clarence of Colfax, Iowa; Mrs. Minnie Sinski and Miss Lora Luther, also of Colfax, Iowa.

After their marriage in 1893, Martin and his young bride settled on the farm a mile and a quarter from his birthplace where they were to spend their lives together, raising their family and sharing the burdens of those early years when nature seemed to have entered into a conspiracy to make life on the farm a hard one.

Two years after the death of his companion in 1928, Martin moved with his daughter, Laura, to Fremont where they lived for two years. In 1932 they removed to the farm where, except for a brief period Laura made her home caring for her father in his illnesses. Martin’s death came as a result of heart failure after an illness which lasted only a week.

In July, 1918 Martin and his wife became confirmed members of the Grace Lutheran church at Hooper, Nebr. In recent years, however, he has worshipped with the members of the Zion Evangelical church at Winslow. On April 1st, 1934, by transfer of his church letter, he entered into fellowship with them and since that time has been a faithful member of the official board of our church. Martin was always dependable in his church relationships and his faithfulness was a real inspiration to those with whom he worked. He had a cheery smile with which he always greeted his friends of which he had many, and that smile will be greatly missed.

His attitude toward his church and pastor was always that of a true Christian. No word of criticism. Always understanding and sympathy. A thing that is greatly needed in these days when many trying experiences come to us in our work.

He was widely and favorably known over a wide territory, and leaves many friends who will be greatly saddened by his departure, but who will cherish his memory and thank God for the privilege of having known him.

Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery. There his body was laid to rest beside that of his dear life companion. May he rest in peace - His Pastor.
