John Henry Schmidt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, May 24, 1858 where he also received the sacrament of baptism soon after his birth. In 1867 he came with his parents to Washington County Nebraska. Here he was confirmed in his Christian faith by Rev. E.J. Frese.

He was united in marriage with Miss Minna Kruger on May 4, 1885. Five children were born to this union four of whom, as also his wife, preceded him in death. The first child died soon after its birth. His oldest daughter, Mrs. Hartman died 15 years ago, two years later he suffered the departure of his dear wife and his other only daughter, Mrs. Arthur Scheer. Three years ago the younger of his two sons, Alfred, passed away. Only six weeks ago he had to attend the funeral of one of his two sisters at Wayne, Neb. All this sorrow within the last 15 years left its effect upon Mr. Schmidt and especially during the last few years his health was failing, though he was bedfast hardly a week. He died last Friday morning about 7 o’clock, asleep in Jesus, His Savior, whom he confessed on his dying bed. He passed away Friday morning, January 10, 1936, aged 77 years, 7 months and 16 days.

Mr. Schmidt leaves to mourn his departure on son, Wm. H. Schmidt of Arlingon, one brother, George Schmidt,, also of Arlington, one sister, Louise of Roseburg, Ore. Two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mr. Schmidt was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church since his early childhood, walked as becometh a Christian, and held a number of offices in his congregation in the course of years. During the last years he served as trustee.

Burial services took place Sunday at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o’clock at St. Paul’s Lutheran church with an attendance of over 400. Rev. G.W. Wolter officiating. The choir sang, “Jerusalem, Thou City Fair and High". ~~~Obituaries courtesy of the Nebraska Washington County Genealogical Society.
