Mrs. Hayes, Once Mrs. Lewis C. Brown, Died In California At Age 88

Funeral services were held at Elk City yesterday afternoon for Mrs. Alma Hayes, Washington County pioneer who died at her home in Norwalk, Calif. at the age of 88. She headed a five-generation group numbering 100 persons.

As Alma Kennicott, Mrs. Hayes was born at Sandusky, O., May 1, 1860. She came to Nebraska with her parents in 1864 and they settled on a farm near Arlington (then Bell Creek). She was married to Lewis C. Brown on Jan. 17, 1880, and they farmed at Arlington many years. Twelve children were born to them, nine of whom are still living. A daughter, Mrs. Amy Sharp, died only a few months ago.

After Mr. Brown’s death in 1913, Mrs. Brown was married to George Hayes in 1916, and they went to California. Mr. Hayes died a year or two after their marriage, and his widow has since resided there.
