SGT. C. D. JOHNSON KILLED IN ACTION

Word has been received in Blair that T/Sgt. Clayton D. Johnson is reported killed in action on Mindanao Island on March 22nd. Sgt. Johnson and Miss Iris Mundorf of this city were to have been married as soon as he was released from Army service.

Memorial Service for Sgt. Clayton Johnson

T. Sgt. Clayton D. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight B. Johnson of Decatur, Nebraska was born in Riverside, Burt County, Nebraska, November 25, 1919. As a boy he attended the public school at Riverside, and he graduated from Decatur High School in 1937.

When his home was at Riverside he attended Sunday School at the Riverside Baptist Church, where he received his religious instructions in the fundamental truths of God.

He enlisted in the United States Army in August, 1939. He received his training as well as being an instructor at the following camps, Fort Crook, Camp Robinson, For Sam Houston, Texas Camp Ord, Camp Roberts, Ft. Benning, Georgia, Camp Blanding, Florida, and Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi.

On November 12, 1942, he was promoted to Technical Sergeant, and was an instructor in this country for some time

He was sent overseas to the South Pacific in December, 1944. On April, 21, 1945, his parents received the following sorrowful message: “The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that you son, T. Sgt. Clayton D, Johnson, was killed in action on Mindanao on March 22, 1945.” Uilo, the Adjutant General.

He reached the age of 25 years and about five months.

The American Legion held a memorial service in the city auditorium on Sunday afternoon with Rev. Westgaard of Riverside officiating. Special Music by Mrs. James Sears and Russell Laugley, with Mrs. E. A. Sears at the piano was rendered.
