INJURY FATAL TO COUNTY PIONEER

Family Was Prominent in Early History of the County

Mrs. Orilla Hammang, 34, pioneer resident of Washington county, died in Arlington Wednesday evening at the home of her son, John C. Hamming. Five weeks ago Mrs. Hammang fell and broke her hip while visiting at the home of her grandson in Sioux City. Several weeks ago she was brought to the home of her son where she was in the care of a trained nurse at the time of her death.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Congregational church in Arlington, with Rev. H. D. Van Valkenburgh, pastor of the church, and Rev. A. F. Newell of Blair officiating.

Orilla Earl’s parents homesteaded near Fontanelle hill which was formerly known as “Earl Hill”. She was married to Peter Hamming February 5, 1868 at the Fremont House, early Fremont hostelry. Her husband later served as county judge of Washington county. His death occurred a number of years ago.

Surviving are one son, John C. of Arlington; two grandchildren, Leonard Hammang of Sioux City, Iowa; and Mrs. Eloise Richards, residing in California; and one sister, Mrs. Priscilla Stewart whose home is in New Mexico. Earl and Kirk Lee of Fremont are nephews.

Mrs. Hammang has many warm friends in Blair, having lived here when her husband was county judge, and later made her home with Mrs. William Wilkins of this city. While in Blair she was a faithful attendant of the Congregational church.
