JOHN T. FITCH, 77, DIES AT HERMAN

John Thomas Fitch was born August 15, 1857 at Huron, Indiana, and died November 7, 1934 at his home near Herman, Nebraska. His age was 77 years, 2 months and 22 days.

He grew to manhood at Huron, Indiana and came to Nebraska with his parents on October 14, 1875. He lived for one year at Tekamah, Nebr., and the rest of his life was lived in and around Herman, Nebr., with the exception of fifteen months in Los Angeles, California.

He was united in marriage to Louie Ethel Cooper on January 17, 1889 at Herman, Nebraska. To this union were born ten children, seven of whom died in infancy. One son, Clyde Fitch, also preceded him in death on October 20, 1932. There are left to mourn his death his wife and two sons, James Roscoe Fitch of Los Angeles, California and Wallace Fitch of Herman, Nebraska; one sister, Mrs. J. D. Gordon of Fremont, Nebr.; and six grandchildren.

He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Herman, which he joined on March 15, 1908. He was a member of Landmark lodge No. 222 A.F.&A.M. of Herman and also the United Workman, and in his young manhood of the I.O.O.F. of Tekamah, Neb. He was justice of the peace for Herman township for the greater part of the time since 1890, and was re-elected to that office in the election of November 6, 1934, the day before his death.

He has been active in the affairs of his community as a farmer and as a businessman. For several years he was associated with his father in a general merchandise store in Herman. He was manager of a grain elevator in Herman from 1907 until 1925. In the summer of 1925 he went with his wife to California. He was a farm owner and a farmer on farms near Herman from 1891 until 1907, and since returning from California in 1926.

He took a keen interest in political and other events of his time, and had an active mind that sought information and made its judgments about vital current issues.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at two o’clock Friday afternoon, Rev. C. C. Norlin of the Herman Methodist church officiated.
