OBITUARY OF MRS. H. MEIER

Mrs. Amalia Meier was born in Westphalia, Germany on November 11, 1847. She died at her home in Winslow Sunday night, July 8th, 1934, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 28 days.

She came to make her home in America in 1868, traveling from St. Joseph, Mo. to Omaha on a riverboat, the railroad not yet extending this far west. Soon after reaching Fontanelle, her destination, she became the bride of H. Meier. The following year the couple settled on a homestead eight miles northeast of Fontanelle where they lived for many years. This union was blessed with nine children, two of which died in infancy, and one, the oldest son Henry, by accident in the spring of 1925.

Mr. Meier died in May, 1904, leaving Mrs. Meier the responsibility of raising the family and making the living. She continued to live on the farm until in 1913 when she moved to Winslow where she made her home until death. Upon moving to Winslow, she united with the Evangelical church, of which she has been an honored and loved member.

Here she endeared herself to all who came to know her. Her sunny smile and kind words fell upon all like the dew from heaven. Her thoughts were always of others, and no greater happiness could come to her than to render some service or give some gift which would make someone else happy. She believed and experienced the truth that “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. She had discovered the secret of eternal youth; for, while the years left their mark upon her frail body, her spirit was ever fresh and her interests and sympathies as broad as human need.

Surviving her are one son, Albert Meier of Fremont, Nebr., and five daughters: Mrs. Carl Nielsen of Holt, Minn.; Mrs. Mary Gately of Winslow, Nebr.; Mrs. A. E. Seelmeyer of Hooper, Nebr.; Mrs. E. H. Carpenter and Mrs. P. L. Robinson, both of Fremont, Nebr.; twenty three grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

Her body was laid to rest beside those of her husband and three children in the Telbasta cemetery; there to await the resurrection when those who are dead in Christ shall be raised and reunited with those whom they love, never to be separated again throughout eternity.

Services were conducted in the Winslow Evangelical church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, July 11th. Rev. Milford G. Vance, the pastor, officiated.
