(veteran)

Mr. Carpenter, whose death was noted in last week’s Enterprise, had a warm friend and admirer in S. F. Anderson. They were intimate friends for many years and Mr. Anderson accords the deceased many virtues.

He says that his old friend was a direct descendant, on his mother’s side, of the Marsh family who came over in the Mayflower; that he had in his possession during his life documents signed by the historical Governor Bradford and that he always kept these document and his discharge papers from his service in the Civil War in a package together.

He served three years in the infantry service and enlisted in the navy and served till the close of the war.

While in the service he was quite severely wounded but could never be persuaded to make application for a pension, though he was justly entitled to one and could have procured it for the asking.
