MRS. A. L. HUGHES BURIED THURSDAY

Mrs. A. L. Hughes of David City, Nebraska, a sister of Mrs. W. Reckmeyer of Arlington, passed away suddenly at her office in David City on Monday, August 14th. The body lay in state at the Reckmeyer home Wednesday afternoon, and on Thursday services were conducted at the St. Luke’s Methodist church of David City with Rev. Thomas W. Parkin of Arlington in charge. Many of her Washington County friends attended the last rites.

As Alice Cary Couffer, she was born in Harlan, Iowa on August 16th, 1871, one of the five daughters of the late Rev. and Mrs. G. M. Couffer who for many years lived in Arlington. She was graduated from the David City schools in 1890, and is the first of her class to pass away. Her education was continued in an art school at Shenandoah, Iowa, after which she taught for several years in a college at Steubenville, Ohio. In 1900 she went to Washington, D.C., where she held a government position as statistical draughtsman in the census Bureau for twelve years, resigning in 1912 to marry A. L. Hughes of David City on June 12.

She assisted Mr. Hughes in his law and abstract business and continued the work after his death eight years ago. She was a member of the Methodist church, a member of the Chapter BQ, P.E.O., the Order of the Eastern Star, the Owls Club, D.A.R. and Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. W. A. Reckmeyer of Arlington, Mrs. A. T. Hutchinson of Norfolk and Mrs. M. E. Walters of Greeley, Colorado.

Interment was made in the David City Cemetery.
