Pioneer Passes On

Mrs. Anthony ( Elizabeth) Michelsen, who came to DeSoto in 1873, died in Omaha Saturday, April 29, at the age of 93 years. She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, October 16, 1846, and at the age of 18 years came to Philadelphia, Pa., where she remained about two years, then residing in Davenport, Ia., for a year, coming to Omaha in 1867, where she lived until she came to DeSoto with her husband in 1873. They accumulated over 1100 acres of land adjacent to the Missouri river, most of which has since been eaten away by the stream. They moved to Omaha in 1914, Mr. Michaelson passing away ten years later. Seven children were born to them, five of whom survive; Mrs. Christena Kindred of Omaha, George of Ft. Calhoun, Mrs. Charlotte Matthews of Winnebago, Ole of Oakland and Harry of Omaha.

Mrs. Michelsen possessed in marked degree the courage, friendliness and helpfulness of the Nebraska pioneers, and while most of those who first settled in Nebraska have passed on, the memory of the long and useful life of Mrs. Michaelson, like those others who suffered early day hardships, will long remain.

The funeral services were held Tuesday, with burial in the Blair cemetery.
