Helene K. Andrews, 93, of Blair, died Dec. 17, 2009, in Blair. Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 21, at the First United Methodist Church in Blair.

Helene Kathryn Lurvey was born Nov. 25, 1916, in Omaha to Dr. Homer D. and Lola C. (Beard) Lurvey. In 1934, she graduated from Hay Springs High School and enrolled briefly in the nursing program at Chadron State Teachers College.

In 1936, she married Walter H. "Andy" Andrews in Rapid City, S.D.

They moved to Blair in the late 1940s where her husband became the utilities commissioner and volunteer fire chief. Mrs. Andrews became involved in the White Spot Extension Club, and served as noble grand with the Rebekah Lodge, was president of the Past Noble Grand club, and active member of the Royal Neighbors, Firemen's Auxiliary, First Methodist Church, Memorial Community Hospital Auxiliary, and was especially involved during her later years with the Genealogy Society and was proud to trace her family tree and assist others with tracing theirs.

She worked during World War II at the bomber plant in Omaha and as society editor of the Blair newspapers for several years.

Her enjoyments stemmed from her expanding family and smiles as she sang her "golden oldies" to her grand-and great-grandkids; the Nebraska Cornhuskers, news stories relating to her grandchildren's careers and showing her love and generous nature to any who needed her cheer and encouragement. It wasn't until the fall of 2009 that she moved to Crowell Memorial Home due to health issues.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Robert Fisher, Fox Lake, Wis.; son-in-law and friend, Richard Kubie, Blair; six grandchildren, Scott and Cherie Kubie, Omaha, Kris and Glen Attema, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Brent Fisher, Columbia, Tenn., Brian and Amy Fisher, Woodbury, Minn.; Tara and Shane Rhodes, Waupun, Wis., and Kathryn and Roger Schaalma, Beaver Dam, Wis.; six great-grandchildren, Raef Kubie, Allison and Brayden Fisher, Evan Rhodes, and Tyson and Brooklyn Schlaama; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Lillian Thieman, Omaha, Anne Waldeck, Gretna, and Sue and Max Turnquist, Gothenburg; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Lloyd Lurvey, Omaha, and Herbert and Imogene Lurvey of Bennington; and many nieces and nephews whose lives she also watched and admired.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997; and in 2006 by her daughter, Mary Jo Kubie; two sisters, Camilla and Shirley; and two brothers, John and William.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mom - Grandma - Gran Gran

I know you're in a better place
And your pain has lost its hold
But it's tough to say goodbye to you
Who had a heart of gold.

You're now with Dad and Mary Jo
And God is with you too.
Perhaps you'll meet those ancestors
Who were of interest to you.

Perhaps you'll sing "Make new friends..."
Or share a smile or two...
Or start a Dairy Queen in Heaven!
Now, that's something you just might do!
