#1-News Article March 1923

Cassius Melvin Ward, eldest child born to Merton and Anna Ward, was born at Kennard, Nebr. October 15, 1908 and died at his home at 2207 Maple Street, Omaha, Nebr. March 13, 1923; being at the time of his death 14 years, 4 months and 28 days of age.

Melvin was certainly a fine boy in every way. He took a personal and unselfish interest in people and especially in elderly people, which was quite unusual for one of his years.

He came into membership in the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church by letter from the Kennard church together with his parents last April. He was a member of the Trinity Sunday School. He was a bright student and was doing fine work in the freshman year in the Technical High School. Melvin had no bad habits and was industrious and happy in his work. Thus is briefly told of another who has lived and labored and loved until his life has woven itself into our own and then the Father has taken him unto Himself.

The parents and little sister, the relatives and many friends all have the prayers and sympathy of this Community in their great sorrow. Services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon and the body was shipped to Arlington on the train and brought to Kennard in a hearse that evening. Funeral services were to have been held from the M.E. Church here Thursday afternoon but on account of the weather, had to be postponed until Friday afternoon, Rev. W. D. Smith conducting the services here and at the cemetery. A profusion of beautiful flowers was banked around the casket in the church as mute expression of the love and esteem in which Melvin was held.
