Mary E (Hayhurst) Houghton Houghton, Mrs. C., 40

Died 28 December 1901

Published in Pilot on 6 January 1902

Mrs. C. Houghton, whose death occurred Dec. 28, was born in Illinois in March, 1861. She came to Nebraska twenty-one years ago and was married nineteen years ago. She leaves a husband and four children, two boys 18 and 3 years, and two girls 9 and 5 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Houghton have always lived on the farm on the bottom where she made many friends who mourn the loss and join THE PILOT in extending their sympathy to the bereaved. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon at the M.E. church. The following worlds were written by her a short time prior to her death, and while THE PILOT side-tracks obituary poetry, it cheerfully gives this article space.

(only the last two stanzas are legible)

I shall come if He is willing, At the weary midnight hours And my presence softly 'round you, Shall enfold when storm clouds tower. Shielding you from every evil, Though you may not see my face, I will never leave you lonely, There shall be no vacant place. All the hopes and aspirations, All the precious love we've known; These shall draw our hearts together 'Round the great eternal throne. You won't mourn for me, my darling. (Last three lines illegible)

Note: On Blair FAG # 69593848 name is Mary E (Hayhurst) Houghton. Birthdate was March 8.
