#1 February 24, 1938 - The Enterprise

HORACE BROWNING, FORMER COUNTIAN, AGE 92 DIES

Lived in Wranch School District for Forty Four Years

Horace Browning, a former resident of this county, passed away Wednesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. E. Barns of Walthill, Nebraska. At his death he was 92 years of age.

Deceased came to Washington county in 1870, and for forty four years resided on the farm now occupied by Scott Allen just east of the Wranch school. He continued to reside in this county until two years ago when he went to live with his daughter at Walthill.

Six children survive him: John of Bancroft; Aldin of Bancroft; Clark of Blair; Mrs. Ida Cooney of Pender; Mrs. Clara Petersen of Huron, South Dakota; and Mrs. C. E. Barns of Walthill.

Complete arrangements have not as yet been made for the funeral rites, but interment will be made in the Fort Calhoun cemetery.

Horace Browning was born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, on June 21,1846, and died in Walthill, Nebr. on Feb. 23, 1938 at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 2 days.

Following the death of his father he moved to Cadiz, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. In 1869 he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Pogue and the young couple immediately left for the west, settling first at Craig and a year later moved to the homestead near Ft. Calhoun where he made his home for the next 10 years. Following the death of the beloved wife and mother who died on April 24, 1913, he left the farm and went to Omaha where he lived for 15 years. It was here that he became a member of the Benson Baptist Church. Being burdened with old age and infirmities, he spent the remaining years of his life in the homes of his children, until his death at the home of his daughter Mrs. C. E. Barnes, of Walthill.

He leaves to mourn his departure six children: Mrs. Ita Coolney of Pender Nebr; Mrs. C. E. Barnes of Walthill, Mrs. Chris Peterson of Huron, S. D ,John and Alvin Browning of Bancroft and Clark Browning of Blair. There are also 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two half-sisters, Mrs. Amanda Dunkle of Blair and Mrs. Mattie Milton of Los Animos, Colo.

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Ft. Calhoun Presbyterian Church, Rev Hamilton, pastor of the Blair Baptist Church, being the officiating minister. Burial was in the Ft. Calhoun Cemetery.
