Paul developed rheumatic fever when he was 11 years of age and was bedridden for six months, during which time several local ladies and other friends donated their time to see that he had round-the-clock care. As a result of this illness, he had open heart surgery on August 21st. He returned home on September 6th, but was admitted to the hospital again on September 20th, with a blood problem. He was released on September 28th; then, on Monday night, October 21st, he collapsed at the home of his cousin John Suverkrubbe, and was taken to Immanuel Hospital and from there was transferred to University Hospital where he lay in a coma for four days. He passed away on October 24th at 8 p.m., on his 21st birthday.

He was vice president of the National Honor Society, president of his freshman and junior classes, sophomore vice president, and Student Council president as a senior.

He was chosen to attend Boys State when he was a junior, took second place in a local math contest and was a homecoming attendant in his senior year.

Paul is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Froehlich of Ft. Calhoun, his father, Alvin Froehlich of Ulysses, Nebraska, and three sisters, Mrs. Lyle (Adrienne) Shipley, Diane Marear, and Mrs. Darrel (Betsy) Halford. Three nieces, one nephew, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.
