NELSON JACKSON, 89, DIES AT HERMAN WED.

Old Settler Prominent in County Dies at Age of 89 Years

Nelson Jackson, know to many Washington county people for his sterling qualities, died at his home in Herman at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday. He had been ill for about six months, suffering from cancer.

He was born in Sweden in May, 1848, and when about twenty years of age came to America, living for a time in Illinois and then coming to Iowa. In Iowa he met and married, and immediately he and his wife set out in a covered wagon for this county where previously Mr. Jackson had purchased an eighty acre tract in the New England neighborhood.

For around forty years they resided on this farm, and here a family of nine children were reared, seven of whom are still living, and with the wife mourn his death. The children are: Henry, John, George and Mrs. Chris Bendorf, all of this county; Mrs. Celia Denny of Minnesota; Thomas of Kansas City, Missouri; and Eugene of Omaha.

During the late war Mr. and Mrs. Jackson had the great grief of losing a son in action. Charles, for whom the Legion chapter is named, lost his life.

About fifteen years ago Mr. And Mrs. Jackson left the farm and built a home in Herman and have spent their declining years in comfort, with their children close at hand which added much to their happiness.

Mr. Jackson was a great Mason and always loyal to the teachings of the order. He was a man of the highest type, honest and of a kindly disposition that endeared him to all who came in contact with him.

The funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Herman, and interment will be made in the Herman cemetery.
