EARLY SETTLER PASSES AWAY

Mary Jane Gilliam, 83 years of age of Tekamah passed away on Tuesday evening, October 23rd following several months of failing health.

Deceased was born in North Carolina on November 7th, 1862. When she was four years old she moved with her family to Missouri. There she grew to womanhood. On January 20th, 1880 she was married to James Gilliam at Pottsville, Missouri. They then moved by covered wagon to Nebraska in February, 1880, locating in Washington County. Here four children were born to them, one child dying in infancy.

In 1913 they located near Tekamah. Mr. Gilliam died in Mary, 1931. Later Mrs. Gilliam moved to Tekamah where she resided until her death.

Mrs. Gilliam is survived by one son, William Gilliam of Tekamah; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Bovee of Fremont and Mrs. Bert Loftis of Craig; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also two brothers, Henry Hampton of Tekamah and Alfred Hampton of Oklahoma; and one sister, Mrs. Sam Stevenson of Missouri. Three brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. Gilliam was a member of the Christian Church of Blair.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at the Schafer & Peck Mortuary in Tekamah with Rev. C. R. Tanner in charge. Interment was made in the Blair Cemetery.
