At age nine, they moved to Blair, Nebraska where he graduated from Blair High School in 1950 and entered the Navy during the Korean Campaign from January 1951 and was discharged in November 1954. He was married to Sue Ray in 1950 and had seven children Cindy, Danny, Diana, Melanie, Lisa, Valerie and James. In 1966, he married Peggy Jasa and had two children Tim and Angela.
