FRED MARTENS BURIED SEPT. 9TH

Funeral services were held at the grave in the Elkhorn Cemetery on Sunday afternoon at four o’clock for Fred Martens, with Rev. Franklin Elliott in charge.

Mr. Martens was found dead at his home in Arlington on Saturday evening by his son, Earl, who came home for the weekend, and an investigation by Sheriff W. D. McDonald and County Attorney Walter G. Huber revealed that Mr. Martens had died from self-inflicted wounds with a knife, and Dr. R. A. Davies said he had been dead for several days. Mr. Martens had been in poor health for several months, and his wife, also in poor health, had been taking treatments in Omaha for several months. Although a dim light had been seen in the house on Thursday evening, it is believed that Mr. Martens was last seen on Wednesday evening.

He had last been employed by Marshalls Nurseries.

The deceased was born at Elkhorn on December 23, 1885, and was married to Miss Lena Sachs on January 26, 1905. He lived his entire life near Elkhorn where he farmed until ten years ago when the family moved to Arlington. Six children were born to the couple, two dying in infancy. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Alexander of Fort Calhoun and Mrs. Edwin McArdle of Omaha; and two sons, Pfc. Walter Martens, now in France with the Armed forces, and Earl of this place. Several grandchildren also survive.
