LT. J. M. NEARHOOD KILLED IN ACTION

Mrs. J. H. Nearhood was notified recently that her only grandson, First Lt. J. M. Nearhood, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Nearhood, 4839 Oakland Avenue, South, Minneapolis, Minnesota, was killed in action over Rota Island on October 8th.

Lt. Nearhood attended the University of Minnesota where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and a member of the University swimming team. He joined the Navy in July, 1942, and trained at Iowa City, Iowa, Wold-Chamberlain Field at Minneapolis, and was commissioned in the Marine Corps at Corpus Christi, Texas, as a Fighter Pilot in May of 1943. He has been overseas since October, 1943.

He is also survived by his wife and baby daughter.

Lt. Nearhood was well known here where he spent several summers with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Nearhood, and in the summer of 1942 he served as a lifeguard at the Swimming Pool.
