OSCAR HOLMES, BLAIR BAKER, PASSES AWAY

Was In Business In Blair For More Than Twenty Two Years

HAD BEEN ILL SEVERAL MONTHS

Oscar Holmes, well know in business circles in Blair for the past twenty two years, died at his home on West Washington Street last Friday afternoon.

Deceased had been in poor health for some months, and had made a trip to Mayo Brothers Clinic for a check up, but all efforts were fruitless, and he grew steadily worse. He closed his place of business for several weeks and for a time the change seemed beneficial, but when he resumed business he found that the burden only aggravated his trouble. He continued business until the end however.

Deceased was born in Glendon, Iowa December 25, 1880 on a farm. He lived on the farm for years, but later went to Omaha. He learned the bakery business, and after his marriage in January of 1922 to Miss Anna Potter, he purchased the bakery at Blair and continued in this business until his recent death.

As a citizen, he was above reproach. Always of a genial disposition, he made friends of all with whom he came in contact and his friendly laugh and his witticisms were looked for by his friends. He was a good businessman and a good booster for his town, and he will be greatly missed in this community.

Besides the grief-stricken widow, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Henry D. Carter of Omaha, also a niece and several nephews who mourn his passing.

Deceased was a member of good standing of the Masonic organization and at the funeral ceremonies which were held last Sunday afternoon, the Masons were in charge. Interment was made on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Omaha.

Oscar Holmes, 63, proprietor of the Holmes Bakery in Blair for 22 years, died at his home on September 15. He had suffered a lingering illness, and apparently depressed by his condition he took his life.

The bakery, which Mr. Holmes and his wife had operated since 1922, had recently opened after being closed for several weeks while Mr. Holmes was a patient at Mayo Bros. clinic in Rochester, Minn. Mrs. Holmes said yesterday that she did not plan to continue operation of the business alone.

Born on a farm near Glendon, Iowa on December 25, 1880, Mr. Holmes’ life work was that of a baker. He is survived by his wife and one sister, Mrs. Henry Couter of Omaha, also several nieces and nephews in Omaha.

Funeral rites were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Bendorf Funeral Home, with Father Adelbert J. Smith and the Masonic lodge officiating. Burial took place at Forest Lawn cemetery in Omaha, Monday morning, with a short committal service at the grave.

Pallbearers were Ralph Vinton, Walter Nelson, A. Schulz, Carl Kolterman, Jack Burcham, and Ed Wolff.
