H. D. SCHOETTGER FARMER, HUNTER, POLITICIAN, DEAD

Served As County Commissioner And In The State Legislature

Herman D. Schoettger, well known and highly respected citizen of Fontanelle township, died Friday morning, April 30. At his death he was 73 years of age. His parents moved to Fontanelle township from Illinois in 1869, and Herman was born on the old home place where he spent his entire life.

As a man he was strictly honest, and his dealings in business were always carried out along this line. He took a prominent part in all civic affairs and served as county commissioner several terms until elected to the legislature in 1907. He filled this place with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of his constituents.

After serving in the legislature, he retired from politics. He was an ardent hunter, and during his life he gathered trophies of his own kill from practically all over the continent. These trophies he had mounted and placed in his museum on the farm where he resided, and thousands of people have passed through this valuable museum admiring the wonderful specimens which he collected on his hunting trips.

On May 3rd, 1927 he married Miss Emma Franke, and they continued their residence on the old home place until his death.

Funeral services were held on last Monday afternoon at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Carl Hellman officiating. The services were largely attended, and the floral offerings were profuse, and this token of respect to the departed was only a gesture as to what his host of friends felt toward him.

The pallbearers were Henry Toebben, Fred Boschulte, George Schoettger, Albert Nieman, Park Cahoon and Norman Franke. So closes the life of a man who lived a man’s life, unafraid, sincere and generous in his actions toward his fellows.

Besides the wife, he is survived by two brothers, Henry W. of Arlington and Frank of Fontanelle and one sister, Mrs. A. E. Woodman of Omaha.
