#1-23 Aug., 1922 - The Pilot - Vital Coupal, Sr.

Vital Coupal, Sr. passed away at his home at Keystone Park, Benson, on Sunday, August 20, 1922 of pneumonia following a short illness. Mr. Coupal was born at St. Michel, Canada on November 21, 1845. In 1866 he went to the gold fields at Quebec, Canada where he spent two years. He was one of the early pioneers to Nebraska, coming here in 1869. In 1876 and 77 he freighted between Cheyenne and Denver, returning to Washington county where he was married to Miss Marguerite Poissant on January 17, 1878, and resided in Grant township for a number of years. He has made his home at Benson the past twelve years. Besides the wife, five children survive. Two sons and three daughters. They are Louis and Vital, Jr., Mrs. B. A. Hegemony, Mrs. E. M. Lee and Miss Marie Coupal. Also twelve grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 9:30 o’clock Tuesday at St. Bernards church at Benson, Rev. Buckley officiating, assisted by Rev. C. A. Beyersdorfer of Blair, and Rev. T. O’Driscoll of Florence, Neb. The remains were brought to Blair by auto and laid to rest in Holy Cross cemetery.

PIONEER SETTLER PASSES AWAY

Vital Coupal, one of the best known and most highly respected of the early pioneer settlers of this county passed away at his home in Benson on last Sunday morning at seven o’clock after a short illness of pneumonia.

Mr. Coupal was a native of Canada, having been born at St. Michael, Canada Oct. 28, 1843.

He came to Washington county, Nebraska in 1856, settling at Vacoma where later he homesteaded, and where he lived until a few years ago when, on account of advanced age, he moved to Benson where he died at past 78 years of age.

Mr. Coupal was a man of much ability and in the community where he lived was looked to as adviser in financial and civil affairs.

He was married in 1869 to Miss Marguerite Poissant, and to them six children were born, five of whom are still living, Mrs. Bernie Hagerman, Mrs. Edward Lee, Louie, Marie and Vital, Jr., who all reside in Benson.

The funeral services were held at St. Bernards church in Benson on Tuesday, August 22, and interment was made in the Blair cemetery immediately following.

The deceased leaves a devoted wife and five children who deeply mourn their loss.

WASHINGTON COUNTY PIONER DIES AT HIS HOME IN BENSON
