#1-26 July, 1922 - The Pilot - Peter Jacobson

J. E. Campbell was called to Kennard last Friday just after noon to take care of the body of Peter Jacobsen, who was accidentally killed by the discharge of a shotgun while he was crawling through a fence between his place, just east of Kennard, and the August Madsen farm. Mr. Jacobson went over there to borrow Mr. Madsen’s gun, having seen some coyotes about the chicken house the night before. On his way back home he crawled through the fence and the gun accidentally went off, tearing a great hole in his left side causing death immediately. A short time later, as Mr. Madsen was going to Kennard, he saw the body lying by the fence and notified the family and the undertaker. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Galloway officiating. Burial was in the Kennard cemetery. Mr. Jacobson was born in Omaha August 26, 1879, and would have been 43 years of age next month. He was married to Miss Mary Jensen 18 years ago June 29th. Five children were born to them, the eldest 16 and the youngest 9 years of age. Besides the grief-stricken wife and children, he leaves an only sister, Mrs. Sena Johnson of Columbus, Neb.

PETER JACOBSEN

Peter Jacobsen, living just east of Kennard, accidentally shot and killed himself last Friday morning.

He had that morning gone to a neighbor’s place, August Matzen, to return a spray pump which he had borrowed, and on the way over he had seen a coyote, and thinking that he might get a shot at it on his way back home, he borrowed Mr. Matzen’s shotgun.

Striking through the fields he started for home, and just as he was nearing his home he came to the main road, and in trying to go through the fence the gun was discharged, the load going into the lower part of the abdomen and upward causing his death.

It was about nine o’clock in the morning when he left Mr. Matzen’s farm, and at about eleven o’clock as Mr. Matzen and family were on their way to Kennard, they discovered him lying along the roadside. After a brief examination, the proper authorities were notified, and he was removed to his home.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Kennard, and interment made in the Kennard cemetery.

Deceased was a man in the prime of life, an industrious farmer, well liked and respected by his friends who sympathize deeply with the bereaved widow and family.

PETER JACOBSEN ACCIDENTLY KILLED NEAR KENNARD

Peter Jacobsen, living three fourths of a mile east of Kennard, was killed on Friday, July 21, by the accidental discharge of a gun.

For some time coyotes had been getting Mr. Jacobsen’s poultry and otherwise bothering around his farm, and having no gun of his own, he borrowed one, together with several shells, from one of his neighbors and started on a hunt for the coyotes. In getting through a fence, the gun was discharged, the charge striking him in the abdomen, and it is presumed that he was instantly killed. It is also thought that the gun caught either on some weeds or on the wire fence after Mr. Jacobsen had crawled through, pulling the gun after him. The body was discovered by August Matzen about one and a half hours after he had left the house, and he was then dead.

Mr. Jacobsen was born in Omaha August 25, 1879, and was nearly 43 years of age. He was married to Miss Masy Jensen and was the father of five children ranging from 17 to 9 years of age: James M., Samuel L., Hans A., Anna L., and Peter, Jr., who with his wife and one sister, Mrs. C. Thompson of Columbus, Nebr., survive him.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church at Kennard at 2:30 on Monday afternoon, Rev. Galloway of Nickerson preaching the discourse, assisted by the Rev. Smith, local pastor, and burial was made in the cemetery at Kennard.

The passing of this highly esteemed man in so tragic a manner has caused much sorrow in the community, and the sympathy of a kind hearted people goes out to the bereaved family.
