MRS. LENA GRABBE

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon, March 16th, at 2:30 from the German church for Mrs. Lena Grabbe whose death occurred early Monday morning, March 13. She passes away after a long and lingering illness of about a year at the old homestead southwest of Blair where she had lived for fifty years.

The deceased was born Feb. 7, 1848 in Wurtenberg, Germany, and came to America when a young woman of 18 with her husband, Marx Grabbe.

Blair was booming at that time, and the sale of lots was taking place.

They farmed the first year with “Farmer” Matthiessen on the old Stewart farm on the bench, and in 1872 purchased the Brewster farm where they have lived practically ever since.

After her husband’s death, Oct. 27, 1904, her sons took hold of the work on the farm and the youngest son, Henry, has always lived at home with the mother and sister, Annie. Another son, Fred, lives in the Spiker neighborhood.

Besides her children, she leaves as immediate relatives one sister in Germany and one brother in Australia.

A nephew, who recently came to this country from Germany, has been helping care for his aunt during the latter days of her illness.

This pioneer mother came to Washington county in the early days, suffering the hardships of pioneer life, and by her diligence and thrift and that of her family, has accumulated a comfortable home and a treasured heritage for her children.

Rev. Wolters of Arlington had charge of the funeral services, and burial was made in the Blair cemetery.
