FONTANELLE NEWS

The untimely death of Martin Scheer which occurred at Winside, Nebr. on Thursday morning, February 9th cast a sad gloom on the minds of the people of this community. He was taken ill with typhoid fever about a month ago, and was well on his way to recovery, and had written to his folks here notifying them of his intention to come home on Thursday when on the morning he suddenly took a turn for the worse, and passed away within a few minutes. He was born on the Scheer home farm south of Fontanelle on February 20th, 1900 where he spent his childhood days, and received his early education in the Lutheran parochial school. After he was confirmed he entered the Fontanelle public school where he attended until he graduated from the tenth grade. After a year’s course in commercial training in St. Johns business college at Winfield, Kansas, he accepted a position as accountant in the First Bank of Nickerson which he filled with credit for awhile until he decided to complete his business education by taking a course of training in the School of Commerce at Midland college. Having completed there he accepted a position of assistant cashier in a bank at Winside about two and one half years ago. He faithfully discharged his duties there up to the time when he was stricken with the fatal malady. The remains were brought home by his father on Friday afternoon, and the funeral was held from the Brown Creek Lutheran church on Sunday at 1 p.m., and the participation of a large circle of mourning relatives and friends. His mother preceded him to the great beyond about five years ago. The near surviving relatives are his father, Herman Scheer, an aged grandmother, four brothers and one sister, Arthur, Herbert, Clarence, Elmer and Leona, all at home on the farm.
