PIONEER WASHINGTON COUNTY FARMER GONE

Job A. Newell was born in Pelham, Mass. Oct. 22, 1835, and died at Norfolk, Nebr. June 23, 1922 at the age of 86 years and 8 months. When a young man, at the time of the California gold excitement, he crossed the plains with wagons. On his return to his home in Massachusetts he was united in marriage to Miss Laura L. Cowles who passed away 12 years ago.

To this union were born three children, Forrest E., Mrs. Geo. Blanchard, and Miss Kate Newell, all of Blair.

The family came from Vermont to Nebraska in 1885, and deceased has made this state his home ever since, with the exception of two years which he lived in Kansas. For twenty years or more he has lived on the farm just west of Blair.

He also leaves two brothers, J. W. Newell of Blair, M. D. Newell of Arlington and three sisters, Mrs. L. M. Selden of Blair, Mrs. Lizzie Skinner of Coffeyville, Kansas and Mrs. Martha Davis of Des Moines, Iowa.

The funeral services were held in the Geo. Blanchard home. Rev. Leroy Crocker in charge.

Burial was made in the Blair cemetery.

JOB A. NEWELL PASSED AWAY AT NORFOLK, NEB. THURSDAY

Job A. Newell, for many years a resident of Washington county, died at Norfolk on Thursday, June 22, at the advanced age of 86 years and 8 months.

The subject of this sketch was born in Pelham, Massachusetts October 22, 1835, and was married in this place to Miss Laura Cowles, and to them were born three children, Forest E. Newell, Mrs. George Blanchard and Miss Kate Newell, all of Blair.

When the California gold excitement was at its height, Mr. Newell left his eastern home to cross what was then called the plains, now one of the most fertile spots of America.

After his marriage he came with his family from Vermont to Washington county where with the exception of two years spent in Kansas, he has made his home ever since. For twenty years he lived on a farm just west of Blair and coaxed it from raw prairie into being a most productive farm.

There survives him other than his children, three sisters, Mrs. Lydia N. Selden of Blair, Mrs. Lizzie Skinner of Coffeyville, Kansas and Mrs. Martha Davis of Des Moines, Iowa, and two brothers, J. W. Newell of this city and M. D. Newell of Arlington.

The body was brought from Norfolk to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Blanchard, where the funeral was held Saturday, Rev. Leroy Crocker officiating, and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.
