Mrs. Jennie Cook Was Attacked by Indians In Youth

Word of the death of Mrs. Jennie Cook, age 91 years, was received in Arlington Friday morning by her son, C. U. Cook. Her death was the result of bronchial pneumonia.

Mrs. Cook, widow of W. S. Cook, was one of the early pioneers of Washington County. She settled in Arlington when a young girl with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Unthank of Indiana, a family prominently identified with the early history and development of Arlington. More than twenty years ago Mrs. Cook went to Hollywood, California, where she has since resided with her daughter, Mrs. Hazel Kams.

Survivors include four children, C. U. Cook of Arlington; Joseph C. Cook, attorney of Fremont; Roy Cook of Rollins, Nevada; and Mrs. Hazel Kams of Hollywood.

As a young lady, Mrs. Cook taught school in Arlington, and she was one of the charter members of the Arlington chapter of O.ES. When about 14 years of age she accompanied her parents to Denver where Mr. Unthank conducted a trading post and freighting headquarters between Omaha and Denver and on this, their last trip, they were attacked by Indians. The entire party escaped safely, but just two days later the famous Plum Creek Massacre occurred in which Mr. Unthank’s partner was killed, the Indians shooting an arrow into each eye.
