FORMER COUNTIAN DIES AT AGE 98

Funeral services for William Murley, 89 year old Civil War veteran, a former Washington countian, were held Sunday afternoon at Huran, South Dakota; Mr. Murley has passed away the preceding Thursday afternoon at the home of his son, James Murley, southwest of Huron. Full military rites were carried out by the Huron American Legion post.

Born in Land’s End, England December 24, 1842, Mr. Murley came with his parents to the United States as a child of 4; he lived during his youth in Wisconsin and enlisted in the Union Army when 19, serving with the 16th Wisconsin Infantry. After the war he homesteaded near Schuyler until the early 80’s, then moved to a farm near Arlington. He purchased what is now known as the L. H Hansen farm - raw prairie land at that time. There he lived until 1906, in which year he retired to South Dakota.

Survivors include four daughters and three sons: Mrs. Hattie Ramser of Bennington; Mrs. Anna Grover of Rock Springs, Wyoming; Mrs. Margaret Sunday, Eugene, Oregon; Mrs. Emma Peterson and James Murley of Huron, South Dakota; W. D. and John C. Murley of Desmet, South Dakota; also 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
