CARL MORTENSEN, 79, PASSED AWAY EARLY TODAY

Resident of Blair Since 1934; Farmed Near Herman

Carl Mortensen, 79, passed away at the Blair Convalescent Home early today following a lingering illness. Mr. Mortensen, who devoted his entire life to farming, had been a resident of Blair since his retirement in 1934.

Mr. Mortensen was born September 14, 1870 at Fasborg, Fynn, Denmark, coming to the United States as a young man 23 years of age.

He settled at Lyons, Neb. where he farmed for three years. During that time he met Miss Dora Hansen whom he married March 9th, 1899 at Tekamah. Shortly after his marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Mortensen moved to a farm three miles north of Herman where he lived for twenty five years. This farm he sold and later purchased another near Herman where he farmed for another ten years.

Coming to Blair in 1934 the Mortensens purchased a home at 409 West Colfax street which has been his home until his death.

The deceased was a member of the Danish Brotherhood, a faithful member of the I.O.O.F. and took an active interest in many community activities. As a farmer he was a good neighbor and willing helper for those in need and his friends whom he has accumulated since moving to Blair number many. Had he lived until March 9 of next year, he and Mrs. Mortensen could have observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

The Mortensens were the parents of two boys and two daughters, three of whom survive their father’s death. They are: Gertrude Johanna, who passed away at the age of 32 years, Clarence William Mortensen of Los Angeles, Calif.; Nels Henry Mortensen of Ronan, Montana and Mrs. Donald Feer of Blair. Mrs. Mortensen survives and a brother in Denmark.

Services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Bendorf Funeral Home.
