ALICE SMITH ROWE

Alice Smith Rowe, daughter of George and Catherine Smith of Devonshire, England, was born in Champaign county, Illinois November 7, 1864. She died at her home in Blair April 16, 1948 at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 9 days.

She grew to womanhood in Champagne, Illinois where she graduated from the Woman’s Seminary and College. Following graduation she taught school in Champaign for several years.

On a visit to pioneer friends at DeSoto, Nebraska she was persuaded to accept a teaching assignment in that vicinity. She had since been a resident of this state.

On June 1, 1898 she was united in marriage to William Rowe. To this union one child, Arthur, was born.

Mrs. Rowe won the respect of her many friends in the DeSoto community where, besides teaching, she engaged in numerous community activities. Uniting with the church at an early age, she became a member of the Methodist church in Blair in 1907. Through the years Mrs. Rowe has lived as a fine Christian citizen.

She leaves to mourn her departure one brother, Wm. Smith of Ft. Calhoun; two grandchildren, Mrs. Norma Wright and T-5 Dwight Rowe, Co. I, 8th Infantry, Fort Ord, California; a foster daughter, Irene, now Mrs. C. W. Comstock of Redfield, So. Dakota, four great grandchildren and numerous friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 2 pm. at the Methodist church with Rev. Sidney L. McCaig officiating, and interment in the Blair cemetery was under the supervision of the Campbell Mortuary.
