W. G. CUNNINGHAM

W. G. Cunningham, a Washington county pioneer, dropped dead last Saturday morning while working in his garden.

Mr. Cunningham has been in failing health for many years. He was a Grand Army veteran, and while in the service received injuries from which he never fully recovered.

He was born in Virginia September 17, 1838, thus making him 83 years of age. In his early days he freighted across the plains and thus became enamored with the west and later settled in this county.

Being one of the early settlers, his influence was felt throughout the settlement, and his sincerity and honesty made him many friends.

He was married to Miss Eliza Wertz on May 26, 1864, and to this union was born five children, one of them dying in infancy. Those living are: Mrs. J. A. Stewart of Charleston, Nebraska; Charles and Otto of this county; Frank, who resides at the parental home; and Mrs. E. E. Bates, who lives on the old homestead just south of Kennard.

The wife, now 77 years of age, is left to mourn the loss of her husband, but has the love and sympathy of her family of children who are all good, substantial citizens of this county and a blessing to her in her declining days.
