ALEXANDER CARTER

Died on Monday morning, Dec. 1, 1890, in his 88th year of his age.

Mr. Carter was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, on the 23rd day of March 1803, and with his mother immigrated to Lawrence County, Ohio, in the year 1812, where he resided for some years.

In about the year 1825 he was married to Catherine Kneff in Scioto County, and settled near the Clinton Furnace. Here were born Jacob, Nathan, Mrs. Vilini Wild, and Mrs. Dulcina McManigal, Alexander Jr., Thomas M., and Mrs. Catherine Stricklett. In the year 1843 his companion was taken from him by death and left this large family of small children to his care.

In the year 1845 he married Mrs. Martha J. Compton who survives him. She is the mother of Fleming T., Daniel F., Mrs. Ellen Blue, Sardino, and the late Mrs. Johanne Noyes.

In the year 1849 he removed to Adams County, Ohio, where he continued to reside until the year 1866 when he removed to this place, where he had since resided and where most of the family still live.

He had been in feeble health for some days and rapidly declined, passing away quietly at about 5 o'clock on Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James McManigal. The funeral occurred on Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist Church to the Blair Cemetery where he now reposes. He was, at the time of his death, probably the oldest man in this county.
