WILLIAM SCHENK RITES HELD TUESDAY

William Schenk, an old settler of this county, died Monday at 5 a.m. in the Blair Hospital following an acute illness of six days.

Deceased was born in Petersburg, Virginia on April 22, 1869. When he was ten years of age his parents took up a homestead near Yankton, South Dakota. In 1882 they moved to Blair where they farmed three and one half miles south of Blair.

Here he grew to manhood and received his earlier education. When the Spanish American War broke out he enlisted and spent something like two years in Cuba. He was discharged from the service in 1899. He at once returned to the farm where he continued to live until 1931 when he and his brother, Louis, moved to Blair where he lived the remainder of his life. He never married.

The funeral, under the auspices of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the I.O.O. F. of which his was a member, was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Bendorf funeral Home with the Chaplain of the V.F.W. in charge, and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.

BLAIRITE SINCE 1882 DIED MONDAY; WAS SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR VET

William Schenck, 78, resident of Blair for 65 years, died at Blair Hospital Monday. He had been making his home with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lou Schenck, at 60 W. Nebraska St.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. yesterday at the Bendorf Funeral Home. The Rev. D.D. Kennedy of First Baptist church officiated. Pallbearers were members of the I.O.O.F. lodge. The VFW firing squad performed a salute at the graveside in Blair Cemetery, Mr. Schenck being a veteran of the Spanish-American war.

Mr. Schenck was born Apr. 22, 1869 at Petersburg, Va. He came west with his family in 1879, locating at Yankton, S.D. Schencks came to Blair in 1882. After homesteading there, the Mr. Schenck and his brother Lou lived on a farm 3½ miles south of Blair until they retired in 1931 to live in Blair.

Mr. Schenck served in Cuba during the Spanish-American war, in 1898 and 1899. He was a member of Washington County Post 1251, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was never married. Surviving him are his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lou Schenck of Blair; one sister, Mrs. Anna Donnelly of Valier, Mont.; seven nieces and nephews.
