RURAL ARLINGTON MAN ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS SELF

Robert Eugene Jakob, 32, of rural Arlington, died about 11 p.m. Monday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the abdomen.

The shooting accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. at the Ron Booze residence in Arlington, where a group of people had gathered at a citizens' band radio meeting.

A 38 cal. Army Colt revolver had been brought to the meeting by Frank Bates of Fremont for the purpose of possibly trading it for CD equipment, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, which investigated the fatal incident.

Bates reportedly had emptied the cartridges from the revolver's chambers prior to allowing the gun to be passed around for examination by those present at the meeting.

No trade was struck at the meeting, and Bates, who was planning to leave, put the cartridges back in his gun.

The sheriff's office reported that Jakob then picked up the revolver and began to examine it when it discharged. The bullet went through Jakob's left hand and into his abdomen.

The Arlington Rescue Squad rushed him to the Dodge County Hospital in Fremont where he died about 11 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon K. Jakob, and a daughter, Lisa A. Brown, according to the sheriff's office.
