Martha Carter

CARTER--At her home in Blair on Sunday, September 11, 1892, of consumption, Mrs. Martha Carter, aged 59 years, 7 months and 22 days.

Mrs. Martha Carter was born in Adams County, Ohio, January 20, 1833, and was one of eight children born to Josiah and Christian Stout, only two of whom are alive. She was married to Nathan Carter at Rome, Adams County, Ohio, on August 12, 1852. They moved to Nebraska in 1860 and lived a little south of Blair until 12 years ago when they moved to the present home of the family. Eleven children blessed this union--six girls and five boys, of whom four girls and four boys are still alive, and were present at her burial.

On March 3, 1891, a severe blow came to the family in the accidental death of the husband and father.

Thirty-seven years ago she gave her heart to the Lord and united with the Christian Church, and remained a consistent member until she united with the Baptist church at Cuming City in January 1867, where she continued to serve her Savior until September, 1869, when she became one of the original members of the Baptist Church of Blair. For many years past she has been a patient sufferer from consumption and on Wednesday last grew much worse and failed rapidly until 11:15 Sunday evening when she received the kiss of her Master and crossed the river to her home in heaven, leaving her children, relatives, and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. Gone, but not forgotten.

MY MOTHER

Oh, how I do revere that name,

It lightens in my heart a flame

Of tenderness and holy love; It lifts my soul from earth away,

To those bright realms of endless day

Where she is with the blessed above,

While here below she served the Lord, Obeyed the dictates of His word,

For He to her His peace had given; From those who knew her well, I find

To all she loving was and kind And walked on earth the path to heaven.
