ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING FATAL TO FARMER

Found With Bullet Hole In Head With Gun Lying Near

John H. Petersen, well-to-do farmer living west of Rose Hill, was found Monday dead at his home. Apparently the result of an accident, he was found dead by a dead animal trucker whom he had summoned earlier in the morning to come and get a colt that had died during the night.

Deceased was 61 years of age and had never married. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Petersen who had homesteaded here in an early day. He lived on the old home place. He was a successful farmer and had resided all his life on the farm where he died.

John was a man who was well liked and who had many friends who valued his friendship for his honesty and his genial disposition.

Deceased leaves to mourn him two brothers, Fred of this county and Harold of Riverhead, Long Island, and one sister, Mrs. W. H. Rahlfs, also of this county, besides a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral services will be held at two o’clock this Thursday afternoon at the Campbell Mortuary, and interment made in the Blair cemetery.

The manner of his death will never be really known. Alone on the farm with no one to witness the tragedy, it is more charitable to let the matter rest as an accident.

The brother, Harold of Long Island, arrived by plane Tuesday night and will remain until Saturday.

John had amassed a considerable fortune. He had just sold a 160 acre farm and still had another farm of around 150 acres left. His personal property, his bank account and several thousand dollars found in his safe at home tell of his industry and thrift and stand as a monument to his good judgment.
