#1-23 Dec., 1908 - The Pilot - Charles Carpenter

Charley Carpenter, former county assessor, died in the Fremont hospital last Thursday night of paralysis of the bowels. The funeral was held at the home near Fontanelle at 12 o’clock Monday, and interment made in the Fontanelle cemetery. J. F. White, E. B. Carrigan and John Dulaney went over from here to attend the funeral which was conducted by the Arlington Masonic lodge of which Mr. Carpenter was a member. He was 48 years of age and leaves a wife and two children, a mother and two brothers.

The funeral of C. F. Carpenter last Saturday drew a large attendance, quite a number of his friends from surrounding cities gathering to pay him their last respects. Rev. Cauffer of Valley officiated, after which the body was escorted to the old Fontanelle cemetery by a number of members of the Arlington Masonic lodge, of which the deceased was a member. The burial rites of the Masonic order were carried out at the grave. By his death, Fontanelle has lost one of its best citizens, and the bereaved young widow, two children and aged mother have the sympathy of the entire community.

COUNTY ASSESSOR DIES

Charles F. Carpenter, a well known citizen, former county assessor for this county, died last Wednesday night at the Fremont hospital from bowel trouble for which he had undergone an unsuccessful operation. The funeral was held at 12 o’clock Saturday at the Carpenter residence in Fontanelle.

Mr. Carpenter was born and raised in Fontanelle and was one of the town’s best citizens. He was born April 19, 1860. His mother, who is still living, was one of the first settlers there, having gone to Fontanelle with the first colony in 1856.

He farmed for a livelihood while residing in town. Five years ago he was elected county assessor of Washington county, and he served four years. He had gained a large acquaintanceship over the county.

Mr. Carpenter is survived by a young wife, who was formerly Miss Nannie Steffy, and two children, both boys under two years of age.
