JOHN PATRICK PASSES AWAY

After a lingering illness, death came to the relief of John Patrick last Sunday evening, and the funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist church, the old soldiers and Masons having charge.

Deceased was born near Greensburg, Decatur county, Indiana November 30th, 1840 where he grew to manhood and received his education in the district schools. In August, 1861 he enlisted in Company D. Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served in the army of the Potomac, participating in all the great conflicts. He was severely injured in the battle of the wilderness three days before the term of his enlistment expired, compelling him to remain in a hospital at Washington, D.C. sometime after the term of his enlistment. In the fall of 1864 he returned to his home, still suffering from his wounds which never entirely healed and caused him considerable suffering all through life.

On the 24th of August, 1865 he was married to Miss Delia A. Mathews and in the following September, with team and covered wagon, the young couple came to western Iowa, settling in Manona county. Mr. Patrick was ordained as a minister of the gospel in 1870 and served as pastor of the Soldiers’ Valley Baptist church for eight years, later serving two years as pastor an Mondamin, Iowa, and then accepted a call to the Baptist churches at Herman, Neb. and New England. He served these churches until he was compelled to retire from the ministry on account of failing health. Soon after this time he moved with his family to Blair, and was a familiar figure on our streets.
