25 Aug., 1940 - Blair Republican - Samuel Batty - Veteran

Last Thursday afternoon Samuel Batty and daughters, Hannah and Lucy, returned from a six weeks’ visit at the old home in Delaware county, Penn. Mr. Batty enjoyed the trip immensely and came back in his usual health. On Sunday he had an attack of heart trouble and the doctor was called. He rallied from this, but remained abed all day Monday. In the evening he had another attack and despite the efforts of his physicians, the heart ceased to beat entirely at about 10:45 and all was over. The funeral will be held at the Episcopal church at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon under the auspices of the G.A.R., his favorite fraternity. The remains will be laid to rest in the Blair cemetery by the side of his wife, whose death occurred April 10th, 1900. Mr. Batty was born in Devonshire, England Feb. 17, 1832, and came to America with his parents in 1849, settling in Delaware county, Penn. He was married to Miss Sarah Piatt at Walesville, N.Y. and came to Merrick county, Neb. in April, 1876, and to this city in October ’94. Nine children survive them, four sons and five daughters. Sam lives at Cedar Rapids, Neb.; Ben at Grant’s Pass, Oregon; Joe at Big Piney, Wyo.; and George in this city. Mrs. H. Rice lives at Big Piney, Wyo.; Mrs. Wm. Henderson and Mrs. B. F. Bernick at St. Edwards, Neb.; and Hannah and Lucy in this city. Mr. Batty served for about a year in the 1st regiment of Pennsylvania Reserves when he suffered a sunstroke and was mustered out when sufficiently recovered. Besides belonging to the G.A.R. he was both a Mason and a K.P. but seldom attended the two latter, preferring his army associates who will have charge of the funeral services.
