#1-18 Aug., 1940 - Blair Republican - Sarah Jane Joy O’Hanlon

Clark O’Hanlon received a telegram yesterday afternoon which conveyed the sad information of the sudden death of his mother, Mrs. Sarah J. O’Hanlon at Hartford, Kansas. The remains will be brought here Thursday for interment in the Blair cemetery. The funeral service will be held at Mr. O’Hanlon’s home at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon. Mrs. O’Hanlon lived on a farm up on York Creek for many years, and after the death of her husband in 1897 she lived in and near this city. She bought a farm near Hartford last spring, and moved there in April with the four children who remained at home, William, Edward, Howard and Florence. A daughter, Mrs. N. L. Titus, lives on an adjoining farm near Hartford. The other children are John, who lives in Mexico; Clark of this city; Henry, who lives at Wall Street, Colo.; Charles in Omaha; Mrs. R. E. Howe at Arkansas City, Kans.; and Mrs. J. H. Park of Omaha. She was about 60 years of age, and had always been a very healthy woman. The cause of her death has not yet been learned here.

The funeral of Mrs. Sarah J. O’Hanlon was held at the residence of her son, Clark, at 4 o’clock last Friday afternoon, the body having arrived from Hartford, Kas., on the afternoon train. Rev. J. B. Priest conducted the funeral services. Death was the result of heart failure, the attack lasting but about one hour. Edward and Florence O’Hanlon accompanied the body from Hartford to this city.

Sarah Jane Joy was born in Washington county, Ohio March 28, 1848. In this county she was married to Richard O’Hanlon December 18, 1881. In 1865 she and her husband came to the Territory of Nebraska and settled in DeSoto, Washington county. Her husband died June 30, 1897. In April this year she removed to Hartford, Kansas where she died of heart disease Aug. 16th, 1904, aged 61 years, 4 months and 19 days. She leaves surviving her eleven children, the youngest being 17 years of age. She united with the Methodist church at Marietta, Ohio when yet a girl. The body was brought to Blair for burial. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. B. Priest at the residence of Mr. Clark O’Hanlon on Friday, August 19, at 4 p.m., and the body was laid to rest in the Blair Cemetery.
