#1-20 July, 1904 - Blair Courier - Gertrude Verlautz

Mr. and Mrs. August Verlaiutz came over from Ft. Dodge, Ia. last Saturday on a very sad mission, to lay the remains of their eldest daughter, Gertrude, in the cemetery at this place. Her death occurred the day before of rheumatism of the heart, after an illness of about three weeks. The family moved over to Ft. Dodge several months ago, but Gertrude remained with her aunt, Mrs. Wm. Faber, until school was out, when she was graduated from the eighth grade. The funeral was held at the Wm. Faber home at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. S. W. Richards officiating, and was attended by a large number of the old friends of the family. Mrs. E. V. Capps, from whom Gertrude had been taking music lessons, sang a very beautiful solo. Gertrude was a favorite with everyone who knew her and her death at the prime of life, fourteen years of age, is very sad indeed. The bereaved family has the heartfelt sympathies of their many friends in this city. They returned to Ft. Dodge on Tuesday, but Mr. Verlautz says they may move back to this city for that will not seem like home to them now. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Crum of Council Bluffs and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bruce, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Adams and Mrs. C. Chamberlain of Herman, were here to attend the funeral service.

#2-20 July, 1904 - The Pilot - Gertrude Verlautz

The funeral of little Gertie Verlautz took place Sunday afternoon at four o’clock from the Will Faber home on Colfax street, Rev. S. W. Richards officiating. Before leaving Blair for Fort Dodge, the little girl had suffered from what was termed dutch measles, but had seemingly recovered from this. About three weeks ago she was taken down with inflammatory rheumatism from which she could not recover. The little girl was fourteen and the oldest of four children, and was a lovable little girl. In their sad hour of bereavement, Mr. and Mrs. Verlautz have the sympathy of their many friends hereabouts. Mr. and Mrs. Verlautz returned to Council Bluffs Tuesday where they will remain till tomorrow when they will return to Fort Dodge, Iowa.

SAD DEATH OF A YOUNG GIRL

Gertrude Verlautz, Fourteen Years Old, Dies.

The death of Gertrude Verlautz, the fourteen year old daughter of A. Verlautz, the proprietor of the Famous, occurred at the family home on Third Avenue south at 3:40 Thursday afternoon. The death was caused by complications of pneumonia and rheumatism. She had been sick for about a month with rheumatism, which a few weeks ago went to the heart and pneumonia set in, when all hope for her recovery was given up.

Gertrude Verlautz had only been in this city about six weeks as she remained at her former home in Blair, Nebraska to finish the school year after her parents had moved to this city when Mr Verlautz purchased the Famous last January. She had been sick ever since her arrival here although not seriously until lately.

Deceased was born at Blair, Nebraska April 23, 1890. The body will be taken to Blair Saturday morning and the funeral will occur there Sunday afternoon.

The above from the Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Messenger is a brief account of an event that shocked a large circle of relatives, schoolmates and friends in this city. It seemed so sudden, for it is only a few weeks since the deceased graduated from the eighth grade of Blair High School and left us to join her parents in Iowa. Affectionate, lovable and mentally gifted, she seems transplanted to some better world. This is the faith which buoys up the parents in their great loss.

The funeral was from the residence of William Faber on Sunday at 4 p.m., and burial was at the family lot in Blair Cemetery. The rooms and casket were adorned with a profusion of lovely flowers donated by sympathetic friends who rendered their old neighbors every possible attention. The sermon by Rev. S. W. Richards was consoling to the afflicted relatives and appropriate music was rendered by the Baptist church choir. The family, with the exception of Albert, left for Ft. Dodge Tuesday morning.
