Former Blair Coach Dies of Heart Attack May 24th

John (Choppy) Rhodes, 48, former all around University of Nebraska athlete, died of a heart ailment late Thursday night, May 24th.

Rhodes, who had been operating an automobile agency in Spalding in recent years, was well known as a football coach in the 1930’s. He was coach at the University of Wyoming, the professional St. Louis Gunners and last at Blair High School.

He was first brought into the lime-light at Ansley, Nebraska High School where he was outstanding in track.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Sunday at the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Grand Island, and burial was made at Ansley.

He is survived by his widow and two children, John, Jr. and Joan, both students at the University of Nebraska.
