MRS. ELIZABETH MAYNARD, 91, PASSES AWAY

Long Time Resident Saw Town Grow From Its Infancy

Elizabeth Robinson Maynard was born near Cleveland, Ohio on March 17, 1851. The family moved to Fulton, Ohio where they lived until she was eight years of age. In 1867 they moved to Nebraska, settling west of Herman on Bell Creek near Alder Grove. Here she grew to womanhood and was married to Frank Wells in May of 1874.

After the death of the first husband, she was married to Benjamin Curtis Maynard, a newspaper man who in later years was foreman in the Pilot at Blair.

Immediately after their marriage they published the Arlington paper. In 1896 they moved to Ouray, Colorado and published the Ouray Herald for several years.

Two sons are born to them while living at Ouray, Benjamin Curtis Maynard, now living at Grand Island and George R. of Blair.

The family returned to Blair in Sept. of 1904, and Mr. Maynard immediately took a position with the Pilot and worked there until his death on Christmas Day of 1914.

Since the death of the husband, Mrs. Maynard has made her home with her son, George, who through all these years has shown her every consideration that a son could.

She has been in failing health for several years.

She was a pioneer settler, coming here the same year the state was admitted to a statehood. This was the time of wild life and the Indian was quite commonly seen. The father, when he first came west in a covered wagon, was offered a homestead and land that is now a part of Omaha, but he chose land near Alder Grove. The lumber for their first house in Alder Grove was purchased in Omaha and hauled by team to the homestead where he did his own building.

Funeral services were held from the Bendorf Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Sunday, and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.
