E. W. SMITH DIES AT 78 YEARS

Nebraska Resident Since 1898. Well Known In Herman And Vicinity

Masonic funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Mr. E. W. Smith at the Methodist church in Herman, conducted by Rev. Robert Wigert.

The songs sung were “I Won’t Cross Jordan Alone” and “Going Down theValley”, sung by the mixed quartet.

Elmer W. Smith was born December 14, 1871 at Dexter City, Ohio, and passed away at his home in Herman, Neb. Saturday afternoon, March 25, 1950, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 11 days. He was the son of Samuel and Hester Smith.

He graduated from high school and attended a college of medicine in Ohio.

He came to the state of Nebraska in the year of 1898 and taught New England school for three years and the Hill Creek school two years. He is remembered by many of his pupils as a wonderful teacher and a wonderful man. He was superintendent of and teacher in the New England Sunday School for many years.

He was united in marriage to Miss Maud Blackburn of Crooked Tree, Ohio January 1, 1900, and to this union three children were born. Two sons, Harold Smith of Fremont, Neb.; and Clinton Smith of Herman, Neb.; and one daughter, Gladys Meierhenry of Nickerson.

After teaching school for twelve years, seven years in Ohio and five years in Nebraska, he purchased the Fletcher Store five miles west of Herman which he operated for eleven years. He was a conscientious businessman and a real friend to every customer.

Selling his business, he started farming and continued to farm until he retired in the year of 1944 and purchased a home in Herman. He was a member of the Herman Methodist church and of the Masonic Lodge of Herman.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Maud, his two sons, Harold and Clinton and his daughter, Gladys Meierhenry. Three brothers, Orin smith of Massillon, Ohio; Harry Smith of Canton, Ohio; and Howard Smith of Holly Hill, Florida. Four grandchildren: Pearl and LaVerne Smith of Fremont, Neb.; Richard Meierhenry and Ronnie Smith, other relatives and many friends.

The pallbearers were Wayne Loftis, John B. Eriksen, Chris Korshoj, E. W Wilson, Whit Cameron and Fred Robertson.
