MABEL HEWITT DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Teacher And County Superintendent For Many Years

Mrs. Mabel Marsh Hewett passed away Monday morning at 2 o’clock, the victim of a heart attack. Mrs. Hewett was reared on a farm near Herman, the stepdaughter of the late Chas. Nelson.

After completing her school work, she engaged in teaching and for a number of years she was a very successful teacher. She was elected county superintendent and served for a long term of years.

After going out of office, she married Clarence Hewett, a brother of our townsman, Ray L. Hewett. The husband was a landowner in Oklahoma, and there for the past five years they lived happily.

Mrs. Hewett was a woman of high ideals, broadminded and intelligent and all those who knew her held her in high esteem.

Besides the husband, she leaves a brother residing in Fremont. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Herman, and the body will be brought to Blair for interment in the Blair cemetery.

MRS. HEWETT FUNERAL HELD

RITES CONDUCTED AT HERMAN FOR EX-COUNTY OFFICIAL

Services were held at the Methodist Church in Herman at 2 p.m. Friday for Mrs. Clarence Hewett, 62, an account of whose death appeared in last week’s Pilot-Tribune. Interment was in Blair Cemetery.

Mrs. Hewett, the former Mabel Marsh, who was Washington County superintendent of schools from 1918 to 1931, died suddenly at her home in Blanchard, Okla., Mar. 20.

Mabel Jeanette Marsh was born near Craig Jan. 2, 1888, and with her parents moved to the Herman vicinity as a girl. She was graduated from Herman High School in 1905, later attended Fremont Normal. She also attended Wayne State Teachers College and in 1931 received a degree from Dana College.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodges, and once was Noble Grand of the latter lodge. In 1931 she went to Herman from Blair to care for her invalid mother until her death in 1945. She and Clarence C. Hewett were married at Papillion Dec. 26, 1937, and moved to Blanchard.

Surviving are her husband; one brother, Carl Nelson of Fremont; three nieces, Mrs. Margery Oltmer of Orange, Calif., Mrs. Jean Lamberth of Jacksonville, Tex., and Miss Mary Nelson of Fremont; and one nephew, Kenneth Nelson of Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her father, mother, stepfather Charles Nelson, and one sister, Lura.
