2 Feb., 1950 - The Enterprise - George W. Beard

COUNTY PIONEER, 90, BURIED SUNDAY

George W. Beard Passes Away Jan. 27 In His Ninetieth Year.

George W. Beard, pioneer settler, was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa on October 3, 1860 and with his parents, John and Ellen Beard, came to Florence in a covered wagon where they resided until May, 1863 when they moved to the farm where he lived until his death.

George was a member of the Methodist church in Blair and of the Masonic Order and the Knight Templars, in all of which organizations he was held in the highest esteem.

He is survived by his sister, Cora, who made her home with him on the farm. She is the last of the pioneer family.

Two brothers and three sisters and his parents preceded him in death. George received his early education in the district schools and in Blair. He was a man of serious turn, of a kindly disposition and his friends and neighbors all feel the loss of a true friend and neighbor.

With his death goes a wealth of early history that is deeply interesting and which should have been preserved for future generations, but time has taken him and but few, very few, of the pioneers are left and soon these men of that early period will be but a memory.
