EMMETT JOHNSON RITES MONDAY

Herman - The funeral of Emmett Johnson was held in the Baptist Church at Herman at three thirty Monday afternoon. Rev. Thomas Riese of Jefferson, Iowa, an old friend of the deceased and pastor of the Baptist Church in Herman for a number of years, conducted the service. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery. The pallbearers were A. O. Sick and Wilbur Lowe of Blair, Chris Korshoj, Gilbert Potable, Howard Hansen and Melvin West.

Emmett Johnson was known and loved by many people in and around Herman. He was a real friend of the school children and his drug store was a gathering place for the boys and girls.

Charles Emmett Johnson was born near Murray, Nebraska on December 26, 1882, and was one of seven children born to Mary and Richard Johnson.

In 1898 he moved to Washington county where he lived continuously until 1945, except for 14 months when he homesteaded near Sturgis, South Dakota, and while he attended Creighton Pharmacy college in Omaha. He was married to Beatta Mae Kelley on June 24, 1908 at Blair. One daughter, Maxine, was born to them.

Emmett served on the Herman town board for many years, was chairman of the board much of the time he was a member of it. He was active in sports, managed Herman baseball teams for years.

Late in 1944, with Mrs. Johnson, he purchased a drug store at Wakefield where he lived until his death at Fremont on October 29, 1949 at the age of 66.

He was a member of the Herman Masonic Lodge, the Christian Church, and the Wakefield Lion’s Club at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Mae Johnson of Wakefield; his daughter, Mrs. Lester A. Walker of Fremont; a brother, J H. Johnson of Herman; a sister, Mrs. Nell Gilbertson of Blair; two grandchildren, Anne and Jane Walker of Fremont and many friends.
