ADELBERT BALLARD DIED OCTOBER 12

Adelbert Ballard, an early settler in Blair, died Oct. 12 in the Lutheran Home at Fremont at the ripe old age of 85 years. Deceased was born August 28, 1864 in Iowa, and with his parents came to Blair about the time the townsite was laid out which was in 1869.

His father was a practicing attorney and for years practiced in Blair. Shortly after the family arrived in Blair, the father bought a tract of land just south of Blair on what is now Highway 30, and one sister, Harriet, still makes this her home. The parents and all the family, except Harriet, have passed on.

One sister, Grace, followed in her father’s footsteps and took up the practice of law and served as county attorney of this county.

In his early life, Adelbert’s time was taken up in caring for the home place which was made into a fruit farm.

He was married and one son was born to this union. The wife died a quarter of a century ago and Adelbert struggled on alone and held some very good positions, but age overtook him and he became too feeble to work and a number of years ago he was taken to the Lutheran Home in Fremont.

Funeral services will be held next Monday at 2 o’clock from the Bendorf Funeral Home, and interment will be made in the Blair cemetery beside his wife, who years ago preceded him.

Thus passed a man who has known the hard side of the early settler. He filled his place and the call of death was only the finishing of a life of the early ages of the county.
