Printed in the December 2 Pilot, Blair, Nebraska

Charles B. Hain passed away at his home on west Colfax Street last Thursday, having been unconscious for about two days. He had suffered for some time with a cancer of the bladder. It was very painful at times. He had been in bed for a week, but last Monday he got up and dressed himself and came uptown by sheer will power. The funeral service was held at the residence at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon; Rev. O. U. McPround, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating.

Mr. Hain was born in Berkes County, Pennsylvania, March 2nd, 1859. So, he was nearing his 67th birthday. At the age of 17 he came west and spent two years in the Black Hills country, coming to this county in 1878, which had been his home ever since.

On February 15th, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary J. Tyson and nine children were born to them, one dying in infancy and Stanley E. died at the age of 23 while serving his country in the late World War. The local American Legion post is named after him, the first soldier to give up his life from this community. The other children are Mrs. E. Haller, of Arlington; Watson, Mrs. Walter Appleby, Edith, Howard, George and Mrs. Lyle Gilbert, all of Blair. There are 8 grandchildren in whom he took much pleasure.

After residing on his farm north of Blair for some thirty years, he moved to the city some three years ago. Since he came here he took an active interest in city affairs, became a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and seemed to enjoy the freedom from farm labor that city life offered him. His jovial disposition made him many friends and it to be regretted that he might not have had a longer period of rest and enjoyment after his retirement from active business life. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of all who knew him and them.

RETIRED FARMER CALLED AND IS BURIED MONDAY

The remains of Charles B. Hain were laid to rest in the Blair Cemetery Monday afternoon following services at the late home in charge of Rev. O.U. McProud, the remains being followed to the cemetery by a large cortege of sorrowing friends and relatives.

Mr. Hain passed away Saturday evening following an illness of several years duration from bladder trouble, during which he suffered greatly. While not confined to his bed constantly, he was never free from pain-which he bore with fortitude and little complaint, while his devoted wife and members of his family did all that was possible to make him comfortable. Charles Benjamin Hain was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania, March 2, 1859, emigrating to the Black Hills country in 1876, and finally locating in Washington county about three years later. He was married to Mary J. Tyson on February 15, 1882, and to them were born nine children. One died in childhood and Stanley died at the age of 23 years, during the world war, the legion post of this city being named in his memory. Besides the widow he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Ed Haller, Watson, Mrs. Walter Appleby, Edith, Howard, George, and Mrs. Lyle R. Gilbert, all of whom reside in Washington county and were in attendance at the funeral.

For a great many years Mr. Hain was engaged in farming about five miles north of Blair and took a great pride in raising thoroughbred Duroc hogs and purebred chickens as well as an extra quality of corn, potatoes and apples. Nothing gave his quite as much pleasure as bringing samples of corn and potatoes to town to show his friends. Failing health compelled him to give up active work a few years back and with his wife and unmarried children he moved to town to enjoy a well-earned rest. Mr. Hain took an active interest in the work of the Chamber of Commerce and loved to mingle with the members at their meetings and luncheons. He will be sadly missed by a large number of people outside of the family circle.
